چکیده

As computer science continues to move toward a more pragmatic market driven discipline, some of the traditional core topics in computing have become less popular. Atrisk topics include compilers, file organizations, and operating systems. Viewed collectively, it appears that courses that either deal with the internal working of computers or courses that require system programming are being systematically removed from the undergraduate curriculum. This trend can be seen in the 2001 and 2005 ACM/IEEE Computing Curricula recommendations. This paper advocates a project-based approach to reintroduce system development topics into the computer science curriculum. The authors describe the structure of a database system development course, and provide additional ideas for similarly structured courses.

Demystifying EPR: A Rookie Guide to the Application of Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy on Biomolecules

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, also known as Electron Spin Resonance(ESR) especially among physicists, is a strong and versatile spectroscopic method forinvestigation of paramagnetic systems, i.e. systems like free radicals and most transition metalions, which have unpaired electrons. The sensitivity and selectivity of EPR are notable andintriguing as compared to other spec...

Database as a Crucial Element for CBIR Systems

In this article we focus on the presentation of the inner structure of the database for the Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) system containing, in our case, house images. The main body describes the structure of the database (DB) managed with the Oracle 10g DB system. We present to the reader the main differences and problems connected with constructing image and spatial DB in comparison wi...

Designing and Fabrication of a New Radiofrequency Planar microcoil for mini-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Introduction Radiofrequency planar microcoils are used to increase the resolution of magnetic resonance images of small samples. In this study, we aimed to design and fabricate a spiral planar microcoil constructed on a double-sided printed circuit board (PCB). It has four rings with an internal diameter of 241 microns tuned and matched at 63.8 MHz. Materials and Methods To achieve the maximum ...

Low Temperature Plasma Nitriding of Inner Surfaces in Stainless Steel Mini-/Micro-Pipes and Nozzles

Metallic miniature products have been highlighted as mini-/micro-structural components working as a precise mechanism, in dispensing systems, and in medical operations. In particular, the essential mechanical parts such as pipes and nozzles have strength and hardness sufficient for ejecting viscous liquids, solders, and particles. A low-temperature plasma nitriding process was proposed as a sur...

MINI-DB: A Pedagogical tool for Teaching Advanced Database Systems

It seems that designing and implementing database engines may have become a lost art. Although most standard database text books [1] [2] [3] include ample coverage of algorithms for design and implementation database engines, many computer science programs seem to provide minimal coverage of file organizations, theoretical foundations, and algorithms necessary to build a database engine. The sy...
